Toulouse, January 9, 2025 – Airbus has announced that the delivery of the first A321XLR equipped with Pratt & Whitney engines is “imminent.” This milestone marks a significant advancement in the aviation industry, as the A321XLR is set to enhance long-haul capabilities for narrow-body aircraft.

Christian Scherer, CEO of Airbus’ Commercial Aircraft division, revealed during a recent briefing that the first A321XLR with Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM engines will be delivered to Wizz Air. The aircraft is expected to enter service by early March 202513. This delivery follows the certification of the A321XLR by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2024.
The A321XLR, or Extra Long Range, is designed to offer extended range capabilities, enabling airlines to operate longer routes with greater efficiency. The aircraft can cover distances up to 4,700 nautical miles (8,700 kilometers), making it ideal for transcontinental flights. The Pratt & Whitney engines are known for their fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, aligning with the industry’s push towards more sustainable aviation.
Wizz Air, a leading low-cost carrier, has placed an order for 47 A321XLRs, with the first delivery set to bolster its fleet expansion plans. The airline plans to deploy the A321XLR on its London Gatwick to Jeddah route, covering a distance of 2,929 miles (4,715 kilometers). This route is expected to commence on March 31, 2025.
The introduction of the A321XLR with Pratt & Whitney engines is anticipated to have a significant impact on the aviation industry. The aircraft’s extended range and fuel efficiency are expected to provide airlines with more flexibility in route planning and operational cost savings. Additionally, the A321XLR’s ability to operate on longer routes without the need for wide-body aircraft could reshape the dynamics of long-haul travel
